McIntosh MC7300 is a highly regarded, 300-watt-per-channel stereo power amplifier produced from 1991 to 1995, featuring iconic blue watt meters and Autoformer technology for consistent power into various speaker impedances. Renowned for its robust, classic sound, it drives difficult loads effortlessly and is considered a high-value, durable, and versatile vintage powerhouse.

Key Features and Performance
  • Power Output: 300 watts per channel (8, 4, or 2 ohms) or 600 watts bridged mono.
  • Autoformers: Ensures full power delivery regardless of speaker impedance, a hallmark of McIntosh quality.
  • Sound Quality: Described as “fantastic,” “clear,” and “warm,” with strong, deep bass and detailed, smooth highs.
  • Build & Design: Features the classic McIntosh glass front panel with blue power meters. The unit is heavy, weighing roughly 35 kg (around 77-100 lbs), and is known for its durable, high-end construction.
  • Inputs/Controls: Includes both balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) inputs, gain controls, and, on some models, Panloc mounting.
Considerations
  • Age-Related Maintenance: Produced in the early 90s, these units are now over 30 years old. Potential buyers should consider that power supply capacitors may need replacement if not already serviced.
  • Heat: The amplifier can run warm; proper ventilation is necessary.
  • Gain Structure: Some users note lower gain compared to other models, requiring a higher volume setting on the preamp.
Verdict
The MC7300 is highly recommended for those looking for a “big Mac” sound on a budget compared to newer models, offering excellent value for a high-current, 300-watt, reliable amplifier.

What else to know about the McIntosh C 38?

“Ive owned my Mcintosh C-38 since 1996 & cannot find a preamp to best it,ive owned multiple MX models, the C-42 ,C-45 & C-50 in solid state, the C-20 ,C-22,C-2200 ,C-2300 & C-2500 in Mac tube preamps, ive also compared it against my loved Panor/Dynaco tube preamps and the only preamp that beats my C-38 is my brand new C-2600 tube preamp, the Bass & Treble circuits are + or – 12 db that are excellence in their implementation, the addition of the Mcintosh Loudness control circuit is much of what makes this such a special preamp, incorporating different amounts of the loudness contour at all listening levels adds a spaciousness and depth no other preamp has,not even my brand new C-2600,ive ran it with dual Mc-300 amps in mono with XRT-22 line arrays with amps ranging from a single Mc-252 up to my Mc-1201 mono blocks & the C-38 always makes me excited for the next song ,im retired & in my 70s where money isnt an issue,i keep my C-38 because when i buy a new preamp every 2 or 3 years the C-38 always sounds just as good or better,if you are lucky enough to find one with a remote control that isnt broken you buy that preamp before someone in the know grabs it.” – AudioReview.com
